Skin "Photo" Rejuvenation
Intense Pulsed Light System have evolved into a new generation of devices that can erase years! Our office now offers treatments using the McCue Ultra Variable Pulsed Light (VPL) system, the most advance professional skin treatment system available. VPL gently delivers precise dosage of light in small pulses. The light generates heat which targets melanin in age spots, sun damaged skin, collagen to fill in fine line, wrinkles an even scars. The light also targets blood to treat vascular conditions like face veins, leg spider veins and Rosacea. VPL can also treat acne, acne scarring and small warts. This incredible new technology does all of these treatments with minimal discomfort.
Most people report feeling a mild ‘snapping’ sensation (like a snap of a small rubber band). A series of four - eight treatments are done at three week intervals. Each treatment only takes 20 - minutes.

Age spots are marks on the surface of the skin that are brown, black, or even gray in color, and range from freckle sized to larger than a centimeter across. Age spots may appear in a cluster, or alone. They are also known as liver spots, and more scientifically, solar lentigines.
Melasma generally occurs when estrogen and/or progesterone stimulate pigmentation hormones, causing dark brown or grey, irregular sized patches on the face. The condition, also called chloasma or the mask of pregnancy, occurs most frequently in darker skinned women, but can also occur in lighter-skinned people of both sexes.
A birthmark is a mark which appears on the skin of newborns, or develops later in life. By nature, birthmarks are benign, although some people may find them unsightly, and they vary widely in size, shape, location, and color. Historically, a number of interesting myths and legends have been associated with birthmarks.
IPL technology enables high-intensity laser beams to emit from a filtered flash lamp. The beams are filled with plasma energy that is channelled through the outer layer of the skin (the epidermis) to the deeper skin layers (the dermis), in order to dissolve and destroy the unwanted skin cells, and promote the growth of new skin cells in the targeted area, thereby removing unwanted pigmentation. Different versions of IPL technology are designed to target different structures of the skin, and which version is used depends on the patient's desired results of the laser treatment. The most significant benefit of choosing IPL laser treatment over other forms of laser treatment is that IPL technology is non-ablative. This means that the surface of the skin is left undamaged, since the lasers permeate through the outer skin layer to repair the skin from the inside out.
IPL laser treatment patients range widely in age and skin condition. Patients with corrective goals commonly use IPL to reduce skin irregularities caused by sun damage. Hyperpigmentation, the technical term for skin discoloration, appears in the form of age spots and liver spots. Another form of hyperpigmentation is melasmas, caused by pregnancy or menopause. IPL patients also use the treatment to reduce the appearance of scars, birthmarks and stretch marks. The reduction of age spots and liver spots, as well as hyperpigmentation from melasma, require 4 to 8 treatment sessions, the number depending on the depth of the skin condition.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) laser treatment, also referred to as photo rejuvenation treatment, or photo facial treatment, is a nonsurgical cosmetic skin procedure commonly used to correct skin irregularities and reverse the signs of aging.
Fine lines and wrinkles can be diminished with multiple sessions. You will notice a reduction of wrinkles after continual and consistent laser treatments. Patients with younger, less problematic skin, who use treatments as more of a preventative anti-aging solution, generally seeking an overall improved complexion by way of a more even skin tone, and the radiance of a "new" layer of skin cells.
It is highly uncommon for an anaesthetic to be given for IPL laser treatment, as the patient experiences very little to no pain. At most, the lasers produce the feeling of a tiny pinch on the skin, or a prickling sensation. IPL patients also experience no post-treatment downtime, and may return to normal daily activities directly after treatment.
IPL laser treatment first results are a more even skin tone and overall improved complexion. Diminishing fine lines and wrinkles by "filling" the skin from the inside out with new skin cells, after the old "zapped" cells have been destroyed and replaced, also requires multiple sessions, which vary in length and quantity. Scars, birth marks, and stretch marks are also reduced with continual treatment. All results are long-term to permanent.
While IPL enthusiasts from the medical side claim that this technology is safest in the laser treatment field, and has the least risk of side effects, increased skin irritation is not uncommon to IPL patients. Redness, itchiness and (even if rarely) a stinging sensation in the skin, usually on the face, are all possible post-treatment side effects. A definite side effect of any laser treatment is the skin's increased sensitivity to UV rays. Those "freshly" exposed cells that give the skin its younger looking appearance are substantially more prone to sun damage; therefore, it's even more crucial that the patient apply a high-strength SPF sunscreen before stepping out of the house.
Acne affects a large proportion of people, with 90 percent of teens and a quarter of adults experiencing acne breakouts. These breakouts are most common in the facial area, but they often appear on the back and the neck and other areas of the body, as well. Many acne sufferers have found relief through the use of IPL acne treatment, a light-based therapy that is free of many of the side effects of topical and prescription acne remedies.
Acne is characterized by the overproduction of skin oil by overactive sebaceous glands. As the skin becomes too oily, dead skin cells become more difficult to shed; they become sticky and clog the pores. Once a pore becomes clogged, excess oil cannot escape, and acne bacteria have a perfect breeding ground. As the bacteria and oil build in the clogged pore, a raised and often pus-filled lump will appear the classic acne breakout.
IPL, or intense pulsed light, releases a series of short pulses of yellow, green and red light. The yellow and the green lights destroy the bacteria that cause acne, and the red light targets the sebaceous glands, causing the inflamed, overactive glands to shrink. The heating caused by the red light also stimulates the production of collagen, which aids in healing and improves skin tone.
IPL treatment is not painful, and no anaesthesia is required for this procedure. Most patients feel a mild to moderate discomfort, rather like a sharp feeling similar to a pin prick as the skin heats with each pulse of light. Redness and a feeling of warmth in the skin are common after treatment, symptoms that are eased by a cooling pack that is generally applied immediately afterward.
Most patients experience no side effects from IPL treatment, but in rare cases there can be skin discoloration in treated areas, the skin becoming either lighter or darker. Hair loss in treated areas can occur and can be permanent. Small blisters can appear as a side effect of IPL sessions as well. IPL treatments are not recommended for individuals with very dark skin or who are much tanned, and treatment has not been proven safe for pregnant women. Those who are on prescription medications for acne treatment, such as Accutane, should consult a doctor before undergoing IPL treatment. Each treatment typically takes about 30 minutes, and most patients require between four and six sessions for significant improvement of their condition.
Finding a way to remove unsightly spider veins from the legs or other areas of the body is a concern that affects many people. Choosing the right treatment for an individual's specific needs is essential. With the right candidate, IPL (Intensive Pulse Light) vein treatment offers a quick and easy way of removing unwanted superficial veins with a minimal amount of pain.
Caused primarily by heredity, spider veins are more of an annoyance than a health <http://www.ehow.com/health/> problem. Spider veins are small visible clusters of superficial purple or red veins stretching in a spider-like pattern underneath the skin. They are linked to increased pressure within the vein system, which may occur due to weight gain, hormonal changes during pregnancy and sitting or standing for long periods of time.
By administering intense pulse-light frequencies, which are directed through a hand-held device, heat is generated and the vessel walls are damaged. The blood inside the vessel coagulates, causing the vessel to collapse and seal. Over a period of weeks, the spider vein contracts and becomes invisible as it is absorbed by the body. The surrounding tissue remains unscarred and undamaged.
Each treatment takes anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the size of the area and the severity of the condition. Skin may appear redder after the treatment and may occasionally be bruised. Keeping out of the sun until healing is complete is highly recommended. Although there may also be a small bump on the skin which will disappear in a few hours, a patient may return to her normal activities right away.
It is important to understand who is a good candidate for the IPL procedure. A non-smoker who is in good physical and mental health and has no issues with bleeding or blood vessel disorders is a good candidate. The IPL procedure works best on individuals with fair skin.
Among those who should avoid IPL treatment are pregnant women, individuals taking Accutane, those who have scarring around the treatment area and those who have been tanning or have acute sun burn. IPL treatment is not recommended for those who are dark- skinned.
In general, two to six treatments will be needed to clear the area, which are spaced three to four weeks apart.

Rosacea is a common skin disorder characterized by facial redness. Rosacea may initially come and go, but may also develop to become persistent redness or red lines, which trace the tiny blood vessels cross the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. In some cases, rosacea may emerge with additional symptoms such as small red bumps, dry or tearing eyes, stinging and burning sensations, and in some severe cases, a red and enlarged nose (Rhinophyma).
Rosacea primarily affects people with lighter skin types, though it can affect people with any type of skin. Rosacea typically develops between the ages of 30 and 50, and appears more commonly in women than in men. In some cases, rosacea may co-exist with acne. This is known as "adult acne rosacea". Early stage rosacea may be misdiagnosed as sunburn, which often causes a delay of treatment.
Many people mistakenly think rosacea is just a skin problem that will go away slowly by itself, but it may actually become worse and more visible if left untreated.
It is now known that IPLs (Intense Pulsed Light) offer one of the best treatments for rosacea, especially for the erythema (facial redness). To clear rosacea, a specific wavelength of light is absorbed by the blood vessels and quickly converted to heat. The sudden rise in temperature breaks down and damages the lesion. The damaged blood vessels are absorbed and carried away by the lymphatic system, eventually removing the appearance of rosacea from the skin.
The whole procedure only takes 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area targeted. For the best results, we recommend 3 to 5 treatments, usually at 2 to 3 week intervals.
In the majority of cases, results are permanent. However, we recommend the use of sunscreen to limit exposure to the sunlight in order to prevent further damage.
There may be a slight reddening in the treated area immediately after the treatment, but this usually disappears shortly. Make-up can be applied following the procedure. You should avoid sun exposure for 24-48 hours and moisturize the treated area.
